A maze of arms and inlets, almost completely devoid of access by road, makes the Sounds a favourite place for those looking for tranquillity.
South of Picton, on the Wairau Plain, is Blenheim. The town is the centre of a wine industry that is quickly developing a reputation for quality, both in New Zealand and internationally. A large variety of fruit and vegetables is also grown on the plain, and large sheep stations have been established on surrounding hills and along the Wairau Valley.
